I've seen the flexible tripods but also reviews that they break easily. I had read instructions on how to make a monopod from a gooseneck lamp and thought that might be just the ticket, and cheaper to boot since I had a broken lamp handy. Made one with the help of my dad (who has every size bolt and washer known to man squirreled away in a few cans in the garage :-] - thanks, Dad!). Unfortunately, for a motorcycle mount this is a failure IMHO. Required too much tape to hold on target (flexibility in a lamp: Good... flexibility in a camera mount on a moving object: Bad). Also too much shaking movement in the video product... eeeaarrrthqqqquuuuaaaakkke!!! This will still make a great monopod for stills or for shooting home movies; just not bike rides. Back to duct-taping the cam to the handlebars I guess. :-]

I needed a monopod but didn't want to spend a lot of money on one so I made my own using a cheap mini tripod and a piece of plastic pipe. It works great as a monopod and a multi purpose camera pole for tight spaces and also vlogging.

One very windy day in Michigan, my flag pole came crashing down in my yard. I saved the pole sections and later had an idea to use them for a home made camera jib. I bought 2 used german equatorial telescope mounts and tripods on eBay. I disassembled the mounts for the worm gears, axles and tube cuff. One gear is used for tilt control and I eventually plan to use the 2nd gear for pan control. The motor controller was purchased here: www.electronickits.com Other parts I had laying around the house or bought at garage sale or hardware store. Although the motor is noisy, it's possible to do dutch rolls by mounting the camera sideways on the platform. The tube can also be fixed at 45 degrees in the cuff to accept our Merlin Steadicam on the front-end axle (motorless/quiet mode). This is a simple holder for mounting an iPhone on a tripod. What is unique about it is that it's designed to hold the lens precisely over the pivot point of the tripod in both the horizontal and vertical positions. This is important when panning during panoramic photos or taking videos. When panning, you only want the lens to rotate, not swing out of position and mounting it over the screw mount is the way to accomplish that. The keen observer may notice a small technical error. Technically, you want the sensor over the pivot point and not the lens. But since the iPhone is so thin, they are the same for practical purposes
