Sometimes I don't want to use my GoPro... To use any camera (well almost any...) with the GoPro mounting system, all you need is the tripod mount for a GoPro, a length of 1/4-20 threaded rod or set screw (I used 1.5 inches), two 1/4-20 nuts, wing nuts, or knurled nuts (what I used)and a 10-32 fastener (with washer and nut) that is about 1.5 inches long. You need to use this b/c the GoPro system is designed to fit two prongs to 3 prongs... if you fit 3 to 3, the handled fasteners that come with it are not long enough, so you have to get a longer fastener. Advanced Tip: You could even take the fastener in the handle, pop that out, replace it with one slightly longer if you want to keep the stock look. Take the nut off of either the tripod or the mating part, wedge the two GoPro three prong parts together and then use the 10-32 fastener screw to couple everything together. I used the nut so I could have an extra bit of tightening ability. The washer was to cover the hex head pocket that the GoPro closed end nut sits in. From there, take your 1/4-20 threaded rod and thread it into the tripod mount. Take one 1/4-20 nut and spin it down to the base and tighten it. Take the other one and spin it down enough to get the camera on. Thread the camera on, orient it (but don't fully tighten it to the 1/4-20 rod). Use the other nut to tighten against the camera. If you want very accurate panoramic images made up from several overlapping images the camera axis ( or node point) should not vary as the panorama sequence is shot. The Lumix bridge cameras have a tripod mounting position which cuases this node point to widely cahnge during a tripod mounted pan. This modification plate corrects the camera node point to give precise setting and hence produce images which will stitch together to create a perfect panorama. The video shows the materials used and construction guidelins to make your own adaptor plate for the lumix bridge cameras.

This short film 'Table Ornaments and Soft Toys' is really a test production for my Canon 550D/T2i/Kissx4 DSLR and particularly my new Opteka GLD-400 47" Camera Slider. All shots taken with Sigma 30mm F1.4 lens and I still love the shallow depth of field I am able to achieve with this lens. Some footage taken by Videomaker editors with Sony's new NXCAM Super 35mm camcorder, the NEX FS-100 NXCAM. This was a preproduction model but the camera still had some incredible depth of field and was really easy to use. We used Sony's E-mount 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 lens and A-mount 35mm f/1.4 G Series lens with an adapter for this footage. We also shot some slow motion footage using Sony's overcrank feature. The camera will cost 50 with an 18-200mm lens and could be the first camcorder to compete directly with HDSLRs. Check out what it looked like! In this DIY video I demonstrate how to make a more comfortable strap that goes around your shoulder for your DSLR camera. It's very easy to make and only takes three items: strap with hook attachments locking metal ring/ d ring...or something similar a quick release plate from a sturdy tripod such as Manfrotto This strap is very similar to Black Rapid's strap. I redid this test to address two complaints about the earlier test, the white balance and the focus. The white balance was set to Auto before, leading to two different color temperatures. This time I set the white balance on both to 3300k (3330k on the Nikon, because it doesn't have 3300k). Also, some people thought that the Canon looked improbably soft in comparison to the Nikon, so I made sure to triple check the focus this time. Both lenses are set to infinity and looked focused through the viewfinder and when zoomed in on the LCD. The lenses are the same Zeiss Distagon 35mm f/2 on each camera. The tripods are also the same. Thanks to Marco for taking the time to provide his technical expertise. This video was made possible by Adorama Rental Co.

Well, here it is! My latest video! No, I don't own any tripods and I wasn't renting a tripod. My dad was the one behind the camera as I drove. As you can see, part way into the video, I wasn't sitting very high, as my legs really aren't that long, so I adjusted the driver's seat to my leg length. No, I don't have a CDL (Commercial Driver's License) or any license at all, but my dad was letting me drive the truck. Although I may have skipped a gear going into third gear, I still made it through my first lesson. I started driving prior to the start of the video, so yeah, I liked driving my dad's Volvo 18-wheeler around. The buzzing you're hearing in the video is the air pressure warning. The engine under the hood of my dad's Volvo 18-wheeler is a 3406E Caterpillar diesel engine, and the transmission? A 10-speed Eaton-Fuller Roadranger manual transmission. The John my dad was referring to is our commercial truck mechanic John Young. If you noticed, I spoke a little bit during the video, and if you took notice to my actions, I was steering our truck like those truck drivers in Ice Road Truckers. Notice how I recalled the number of the trailer my dad dropped in our business yard. Dropped means that you've lowered the landing gear, which is the stabilizers towards the front of the trailer, unhooked the air and electrical lines, pulled the pin on the fifth wheel and pulled away from the trailer. Making coffee in an aero-press Upside Down I use 1/4 cup of coffee medium fine grind per 12oz cup (.35 liter), and I wet the filter so it sticks in the cap...some say it makes it taste better - but my taste buds must a bit insensitive...I don't taste any 'paper' taste even when I forget to wet it...(or maybe I just like the flavor paper imparts)... I roast all our coffee and it is so fresh that it tends to foam up a bit, so I take care that the foam or grounds never get on top of the rim where the lid must fit down...if it doesn't fit right you will not be able to tighten the filter and it may ruin the cup (you have to empty the aero-press, clean it and start over) Making it upside down stirs/mixes the coffee grounds better, and speeds up the process slightly. I stir with a chopstick, because their big paddle just sloshes and makes messes. I'm using a small stainless pitcher (pre-heated) to add freshly boiled water instead of trying to pour from a large pitcher. Also we use a ZOJIRUSHI 2 liter water heater to boil the water and keep it hot. I pre-heat both the stainless pitcher and the glass (cup) I'm making the coffee in. French Press demands boiling water to be successful, but the Aero-Press will work with 175°F (80°C). Our ZOJIRUSHI keeps it at 195°F (90.5°C0 I've been using the Aero-Press daily since early 2010 I use the funnel to pour grounds into the Aero-Press so it will keep the grounds out of the rim-slot which will cause the lid not to fit down and can ruin a ...

Short film created for final year project at Sheffield Hallam University. Re-creation of the Omaha Beach landings during D-Day WWII. Project aim was to re-create a blockbuster battle scene on a low budget by using digital visual effects. Footage was shot using only three actors on a beach in Mappleton near Hornsea, on the east coast. Then by using visual effects the actors were duplicated and sets created. Equipment Used: Sony HVR-A1E Camcorders, Canon 550d SLR Camera, Manfrotto 055XProb Tripods with 501HDV and 701HDV heads. Costumes and guns supplied by B-Authentic hire shop in Huddersfield. Short film created for final year project at Sheffield Hallam University. Re-creation of the Omaha Beach landings during D-Day WWII. Project aim was to re-create a blockbuster battle scene on a low budget by using digital visual effects. Footage was shot using only three actors on a beach in Mappleton near Hornsea, on the east coast. Then by using visual effects the actors were duplicated and sets created. Equipment Used: Sony HVR-A1E Camcorders, Canon 550d SLR Camera, Manfrotto 055XProb Tripods with 501HDV and 701HDV heads. Costumes and guns supplied by B-Authentic hire shop in Huddersfield. The Joby Gorillapod is a handy little piece of gear for the snap-happy photographer. It's lightweight and incredibly useful for setting up your camera to get shots at angles/positions that would be impossible with a normal tripod. The only hit I would give it is that the plastic construction makes it vulnerable to sharp impacts and great pressure. However, with a little bit of care the Gorillapod will be there to help you get those unexpected shots when they appear. Welcome to the Loch Ness Productions Endeavour launch video. We created this to show our friends, families, and colleagues some selected scenes from our launch experience at NASA's Kennedy Space Center on May 15-17, 2011. We were fortunate to be accredited as press for Endeavour's final launch. Carolyn's main job was to provide stories for Sky & Telescope's web site (skyandtelescope.com). Mark's task was to provide images to illustrate the stories. We also took the opportunity to shoot fulldome video of several events the rotating service structure retract the day before launch; astronaut walkout early the morning of liftoff; the launch itself; and the rollout of space shuttle Atlantis the day after launch. Our all-sky camera is the Canon 5DMkII with a Sigma 8mm fisheye lens. Video was shot using a Sony Handycam HD 1080 camera and an HP Powershot A480 digital camera. Both the Canon and HP were also used for still shots. For launch, we recorded sound using a Sony TCD-D8 DAT Walkman and a AudioTechnica Stereo 822 microphone. Covering a launch as a media professional means jostling with hundreds of other media professionals to get "the best shot" at any given event. It's not always possible to get an optimal position, or even to set up a tripod in some crowded areas. At RSS retract, we set up the Canon on a tripod and shot timelapse. At 3:45 there is a brief shot of an RM repainted for London Transport's 50th anniversary (1933-1983) which helps narrow down the year this was videoed. The promised excitement on the tripod front arises at 5:15 with the arrival of the forces of law and order. Not sure what the excuse would have been if the camera was being hand held, but the tripod did (and still does) present an opportunity to halt proceedings. There is this regulation in the Royal Parks that prohibits cameras on tripods without permits that stems from the early days of street photography (in the nineteenth century) to prevent park users being needlessly harrassed. Hardly the situation here one would have thought, seeing as the offending device was on a traffic island in the middle of the public highway. Director/Editor/Post Production: Bison Producer: James Bretton Production Company: Blinkink Additional Camera: Chris Nunn How the video was made: We approached Jon with the idea for arm-mounted cameras a few weeks before the show, and luckily he was up for it, so we broke out the power tools and set about making some mounts: After dissecting a couple of tripods and orthapaedic elbow supports, we had a solid platform for the miniature cameras. We covered the gig with 5 cameras in total: 2 roving cameras, 1 static, and the 2 'lipstick' arm cameras that were wired into tape recorders at the back of the stage. The trickiest part was getting the cameras on and off Jon's arms whilst he continued to play as his set is more or less continuous.. The 'post production' on this video was unorthodox: All analogue and all in-camera. We were really keen on making a gritty, abstract performance video. So we set to work with magnets, screwdrivers, VHS tapes and a host of other techniques: We made an initial edit and played this back through a £3 TV we picked up at the local market, and 'manipulating' it with a screwdriver allowed us to flutter and flicker the image on screen. We'd also bought an industrial strength magnet and used that to distort and twist the picture on itself. We made several runs through the track in this way before playing everything out to VHS (with obligatory stomping and scrunching). This effectively gave us a new set of footage to make a tailored, grunged-up edit ...

The Total Solar Eclipse of 29 March 2006 Brief History I've first witnessed the magic of a solar eclipse on 11 August 1999, in Bucharest, Romania. I was 11 at the time, and I could not forget it. A deep desire grew within me to see another of these celestial wonders, and the opportunity came almost 7 years later, when a total solar eclipse occured close to my home country (Romania). This time I was 18 and determined to keep it for ever in my memory: I went to Turkey, Antalya, and then travelled to Side, a beautiful historic location some 80 km to the east, on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, on the day of the eclipse. I had my camcorder and my camera, tripods and special sun filters to block the sun's light. I recorded and photographed during the partial periods of the eclipse, and recorded the totality entirely. There are obvious problems with the video: firstly, my tripod was rather stiff and it gets a little shaky when I move it to center the sun. Eventually, the sun is not centered for most of the eclipse: I could not spend my whole time fighting the tripod, when I also had to photograph the event. Secondly, the time of the recording is incorrect by a few minutes, as I had failed to bring my camcorder clock into accord with the 'real' time. Please refer to the following section to see the correct time of the eclipse start / end. After seeing a tripod with a hook on the bottom, I had the idea of using a weight to add stability. Our Velbon has a very good head, but it's too lightweight to be stable in the wind; even fast panning makes it fall over. So I've added a weight, reused from a broken washing machine. You could use a 5 litre water container with a handle; Light to carry to the location, then fill it with water and you've got a 5KG+ stable tripod. Or fill it with drinks for after the shoot!

DIY dslr camera track slider dolly

Using some old tot train tracks, the 'bogies' removed from some old trains And my tripod head with a canon 550d dslr i created a simple track and dolly set up. I had to make a simple aluminium transporter baseplate using angle aluminium from a diy store (£10), to which everything was very simply attached/bolted. It's really smooth as long as the surface you set the tracks on are smooth. I'm also finding using a length of string helps smooth the flow. I have also used a cordless drill to wind the string in, creating an extremely smooth consistent 'track' shot.

First find your 0 tripod in a Thrift Shop for about . You may discover that it has lost its Quick Release Plate. Or you may simply have lost your own quick release plate. Having done an extensive search on the Internet you discover that Quick Release Plates come in many shapes and sizes. And the one you need is not available over the Intenet. However, making one yourself is quite straight forward. This is what you need: Wood -- of suitable thickness, in my case -- 11/16 of an inch or 1.7 cms thick. Saw, Ruler, Drill, Nut, Bolt -- (A standard ¼ inch diameter bolt, long enough to go through the wood and be secured by the nut, with enough thread protruding to secure the camera. This bolt is 1 1/8 inches long. The thread protruding above the nut is ¼ inch or ½ cm.) Washer, Files, Screwdriver, Tenon Saw 1. Have a good look at the mounting for the Quick Release Plate, and imagine how the block of wood is going to sit on it. For example: does the wood need to be cut to shape to fit in any recesses? 2. Cut the wood to size. When measuring the length remember to include an allowance for any recess, together with the securing catch in the secured position. 3. Mark on the wood the angle of any recess, and the depth of wood which needs to be removed. 4. If it is difficult for you to measure the angle of any recesses, just estimate. The track is 1metre long and can be supported in various ways, there are 3/8" threaded mounting holes in each end, and one in the centre of the track to mount it directly to a tripod or across two tripods. Two 1/4" to 3/8" stepping bushes are supplied should the tripod have a 1/4" stud. Two track supports are also supplied for each end of the track, these support the Cam-Slide when it is used on a table or the floor and also prevent the carriage from coming off the end of the track. Suitable for all camcorders and cameras up to 2.5kg. The double rail track is made from hard anodized aluminium and the carriage has low wear, low friction bearings that do not require lubrication. I did a short interview with filmmakers Nino Leitner and Sebastian Wiegaertner at the Sachtler stand at IBC about DSLR's, gear and related topics. They were there promoting the new Sachtler Ace tripod kit. Here is a review by Philip Bloom, a friend and colleague of theirs: philipbloom.net/2011/09/09/ace/ (they offer DSLR workshops together) I did this all handholding the GH2 so there is a slight increase of shaking towards the end... (kind of silly: I was filming at the Sachtler stand, surrounded by tripods and decided to go handheld...)
